An Automatic Kendo Judging System Using Multiple Sensors and Pose Estimation with Depth Cameras

(in English) In recent years, the Olympic Games have introduced additional sports, including skateboarding and surfing. In contrast, kendo has not been included, partly because judging relies heavily on subjective interpretation and may vary across referees even within the same match.
This paper proposes an automatic refereeing system that combines multiple sensors with a depth camera to assess valid strikes. The proposed system evaluates the required conditions for a valid strike—$kisei$, $datotsu$, and $zanshin$—by fusing audio features from a microphone, impact information from pressure sensors, and skeletal motion estimated from depth images. We build a prototype and evaluate the accuracy and real-time performance of the $zanshin$ judgment module, which is particularly difficult for human referees, and demonstrate its effectiveness.
