This study aims to improve the global search capability of the Hermit Crab Optimization Algorithm (HCOA) for high-dimensional and multimodal optimization problems. The conventional HCOA employs Gaussian-distribution-based candidate generation, which provides strong local search performance but suffers from insufficient global exploration. To
address this limitation, we propose an improved method, HCOA-Levy, which introduces a Levy distribution with heavy-tailed characteristics into the historical path exploration mechanism. In addition, a probability parameter for applying Levy Flight is incorporated to balance local and global search. Sensitivity analysis identifies an appropriate probability setting. Experimental results on the CEC2017 benchmark functions demonstrate that the proposed method achieves performance comparable to or better than conventional HCOA and PSO on unimodal and some multimodal functions. |
