In environments where bandwidth is severely limited, such as disaster communications, adaptively switching communication methods according to available channel quality is a critical challenge. This paper proposes an adaptive speech semantic communication system that automatically selects among three communication modes based on SNR conditions. The proposed system comprises three modes: DeepSC-ST for ultra-low bitrate operation (approximately 2 kbps, Mode 1), DeepSC-S for balanced acoustic information transmission (approximately 17.5 kbps, Mode 2), and the conventional G.711 codec for high-quality communication (64 kbps, Mode 3). SNR thresholds with hysteresis margins prevent mode chattering and ensure system stability. Simulation evaluations on the TIMIT dataset over AWGN, Rayleigh, and Rician fading channels confirm that Mode 1 achieves the highest PESQ efficiency per unit bitrate, Mode 2 provides balanced performance, and Mode 3 delivers superior absolute audio quality metrics. This system provides a novel approach demonstrating the effectiveness of adaptive communication resource management in bandwidth-constrained environments. |
