Locusts can rapidly increase in population under specific environmental conditions, forming large swarms that cause severe agricultural damage within a short period of time. When multiple swarms emerge simultaneously, intervention resources are typically limited, making the selection of which swarm to prioritize a critical decision-making problem.
In this study, we model swarm growth as a log-linear process and define damage as proportional to the square of the swarm radius. Using this simplified framework, we introduce different intervention selection rules and compare their effectiveness through simulations, evaluating performance by cumulative damage area.
The results show that, on average, prioritizing the swarm with the largest radius achieves the greatest damage reduction. Although the model does not aim at precise reproduction of real swarm dynamics, it highlights intervention target selection as a resource-constrained decision problem. Even under a simplified setting, differences in selection rules produce statistically significant differences in cumulative damage, underscoring the importance of strategic design in intervention planning. |
