[Invited Talk] Social Signal Processing Bridging Cognition, Psychology, and Behavior -- From Pattern Recognition to Human Understanding, and Beyond to Social Understanding --
Shogo Okada (JAIST) PRMU2025-48
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Pattern recognition technology has advanced from the digitization of physical signals, such as images and speech, to a stage at which it can interpret social meanings embedded in human behavior. This talk introduces a series of initiatives in Social Signal Processing (SSP), an interdisciplinary field that integrates nonverbal behavioral sensing with machine learning to structure the relationships among multimodal behavior, internal states, and interpersonal relationships.
First, this talk presents methods for accurately estimating individual cognitive and psychological states, such as personality traits, emotions, and early signs of dementia, from multimodal behavioral signals. Next, focusing on dyadic and group interactions, I discuss how to quantify higher-level social phenomena, including rapport building, group performance, and persuasion processes.
Furthermore, this talk introduces applications in human-centered intelligent systems, such as adaptive dialogue robots that leverage social signals in real time and driving support systems tailored to individual driver characteristics.
In this talk, I aim to explore the prospects and challenges of how fundamental advances in pattern recognition can bridge the gap toward a deeper understanding of human behavior and the realization of socially intelligent systems.
