Impression Evaluation of Robots Performing Privacy-Protecting Behaviors According to Interaction Environment

(in English) This study experimentally investigated the effects of privacy-protective behaviors and environmental awareness behaviors on users’ impressions of social robots. Two privacy-protective behaviors—voice lowering and conversation suspension—were compared with and without environmental awareness behaviors. The results showed that environmental awareness alone did not improve perceived trustworthiness or sense of security and could even have negative effects. Conversation suspension achieved the highest privacy protection ratings; however, it also increased perceptions of unnaturalness and potential malfunction. The combination of conversation suspension and environmental awareness yielded the highest overall evaluation. These findings suggest that privacy-protective behaviors should not be implemented independently but rather integrated with behaviors that clarify their intention. Designing social robots with coordinated privacy and environmental awareness behaviors is essential for enhancing user trust and comfort.
