Extending the Lifespan of Foreign Language Textbooks Using Large Language Models

(in English) Foreign language textbooks must be continually revised so that the linguistic and cultural knowledge they present remains consistent with social and historical changes in the target region. This raises the question of whether such revision can be partially automated through the use of large language models (LLMs), which combine extensive multilingual knowledge with advanced language generation capabilities. This study investigates a Chinese-language textbook first published in 2011 (15 lessons, approximately 6,000 Chinese characters) and employs ChatGPT to assess and update its content in relation to present-day realities. On this basis, the study examines the characteristics of LLM-generated linguistic and cultural knowledge as a statistical model and discusses both its pedagogical potential and its limitations.
