Posture-Aware Antenna Control for Wireless Link Quality Optimization

(in English) In this paper, we propose a method for improving received power in wireless LAN systems by optimizing the posture of receive antennas.
Stable wireless communication is indispensable for applications such as teleoperation of mobile robots.
Various diversity techniques-frequency, spatial, time, and polarization-have been proposed to enhance link quality;
however, none of them take the effect of antenna posture into account.
We first show that received power can vary by up to 20 dB depending on antenna posture alone.
We then present a system that exploits posture as a new control parameter by actuating each of two antennas with two degrees of freedom to optimize received power.
Experimental results show that combining direction-of-arrival estimation based on channel state information with zeroth-order optimization can significantly improve received power within a relatively small number of steps.
