A Study on Application Development Methods Using Public Transportation Data

(in English) Public transportation data usability is examined through prototype applications for both railway and bus systems. For railways, an illustrated map of the JR West Kinki area is used to provide a familiar visual interface, allowing users to access station information intuitively. For buses, all Kyoto City bus stops are displayed as markers on a map, enabling users to obtain relevant information by selecting a stop. These approaches demonstrate that intuitive interaction can effectively guide users to the desired information. In the railway application, selecting a station leads to a separate page showing surrounding and transfer information, along with the station location and the user’s current position on the map. However, some necessary information is not available from given railway data alone and has to be supplemented through a separate data configuration page. In the bus application, GTFS data provides essential information such as stops, routes, trips, and shapes. However, real-time arrival information and detailed timetables are supplemented by links to official websites. Additionally, dynamic filtering of bus routes from GTFS data requires programmatic processing. These results indicate that while applications can be built using open data, additional data sources or external services are necessary to achieve practical functionality.
