Heartbeat intervals are not constant but exhibit temporal fluctuations. These fluctuations arise from the regulatory action of the autonomic nervous system. Conversely, by analyzing these fluctuations, it is possible to assess the state of autonomic nervous activity. This analytical approach is known as heart rate variability analysis and has traditionally been based mainly on statistical analysis and frequency analyses. Because heartbeat fluctuations are considered to originate from nonlinear and complex physiological systems, the application of nonlinear analysis, including analyses of chaos and complexity, has recently attracted increasing interest. However, no established consensus has yet been reached regarding the physiological and functional significance of nonlinear analysis. In our experiments, indices related to chaos and complexity in heart rate variability increased markedly under cognitive task, such as arithmetic tasks. In contrast, conventional indices based on statistical and frequency analyses showed little or no significant change. These results indicate that heart rate variability is influenced not only by autonomic nervous activity but also by higher-order brain activity, including activity in the prefrontal cortex. In this paper, we present an overview of our experiments and discuss the interaction between the heart and the brain. |
