In recent years, IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) has garnered significant attention as a foundational technology for a decentralized web that does not rely on centralized servers. IPFS is a system in which peers on a P2P network communicate autonomously and efficiently retrieve and share data through content-based addressing; it is expected to serve as an infrastructure that offers superior fault tolerance and censorship resistance compared to traditional HTTP. However, content discovery in IPFS relies on iterative queries using a Distributed Hash Table (DHT) based on the Kademlia protocol, which poses the challenge of significant delays in locating the peer that holds the desired content. Specifically, as the network scales, the number of hops required for discovery increases at a rate of $O(log N)$. Additionally, frequent node join and leave events cause timeouts during the discovery process, further contributing to increased discovery latency.
Therefore, this paper proposes a method that combines the “path caching function” of Provider Records (PRs) with a “pinning function” using dedicated peers, with the aim of reducing DHT discovery latency. This method applies early discovery via path caching to highly popular content and pinning using dedicated peers that are always online to moderately popular content, thereby preventing re-searches caused by peer disconnections. Simulation results show a reduction in the average number of search hops, with significant improvements observed particularly for moderately popular content. Furthermore, we demonstrate that even in high-churn environments, the two functions complement each other and are effective in reducing search delay. |
