In connected cars, selecting the most appropriate link from multiple available options based on application requirements is essential for stable and reliable service delivery. As vehicles move, link conditions can change rapidly. This makes fast, low-overhead, and reliable available bandwidth estimation a key requirement. Existing methods, however, still suffer from long measurement times, high overhead, and unstable estimates.
In this paper, we improve RT-WABest for vehicular environments by reducing the number of probe packets and improving distribution estimation accuracy so that stable estimation can be achieved even with a small number of probes. RT-WABest estimates a reference rate for determining the PT transmission rate from the distribution of Packet-Pair (PP) measurements and instantaneous available bandwidth from the distribution of Packet-Train (PT) measurements. To investigate the fundamental characteristics of the proposed method, we evaluate the proposed method on a wired testbed where the ground truth is known.
The results show that, compared with RT-WABest, the proposed method maintains comparable estimation accuracy while reducing measurement traffic by approximately 64% and measurement time by at least approximately 55%, suggesting its potential applicability to adaptive link selection. |
