Estimating railway passenger numbers using Wi-Fi sensing Yutaro Asada, Atsuo Ozaki (OIT) SANE2026-20 |

Recently, there has been increasing demand for real-time monitoring and provision of congestion information in railway vehicles. This paper proposes a method for estimating congestion levels on a per-car basis by deploying Wi-Fi packet sensors that detect Wi-Fi signals inside railway vehicles. Specifically, to address the overestimation problem caused by variations in Wi-Fi packet transmission characteristics when estimating the number of devices from received packet counts, a correction method is introduced. In addition, terminals belonging to adjacent cars that are mixed into the measurements due to radio wave penetration are identified and separated to estimate the number of devices within the target car. Evaluation results using the ns-3 network simulator and the RapLab radio propagation analysis tool confirmed that estimation errors stabilized under conditions with larger numbers of devices when the correction method was applied. Furthermore, RSSI distributions showed tendencies to separate terminals inside and outside the target car, indicating that a certain level of identification is possible even with unsupervised classification using only signal strength. |
