Japanese learners of English have difficulty in distinguishing English /l/–/r/ phonemes. A major factor underlying this difficulty is phonetic distance between each sound and the L1 Japanese flap /ɾ/. Previous studies suggested that Japanese listeners perceive /r/ as more dissimilar from the Japanese liquid category (/ɾ/) compared to /l/ and /r/ is thus easier to learn than /l/ (Aoyama et al., 2004). It is therefore possible that training on these two phonemes may have different consequences. In fact, our previous study showed that the accuracy of /l/ perception declined following production training whereas that of /r/ perception remained unchanged. This finding demonstrates that perceived phonetic similarity of /l/ interferes with establishing the distinct phonological category for /l/ while dissimilarity of /r/ facilitates its learning. Our current study tests this possibility by dividing participants into two groups: /r/ training group and /l/ training group. Learning of the phonological categories of the two phonemes is assessed by comparing the accuracy in pre- and post-identification tests for /l/–/r/ minimal pairs. |
