Neural Mechanisms for Language Switching in Chinese-Japanese Bilinguals -- An MEG Study --

(in English) This study investigated the neural mechanisms and spatiotemporal dynamics of language switching in late Chinese-Japanese bilinguals using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and delayed picture naming. This paradigm separated object processing, language selection, and response preparation from overt articulation, reducing speech-related artifacts. We manipulated picture and language-cue timing across three conditions: simultaneous, cue-first, and picture-first. Preliminary source-space analysis of a representative participant revealed delay-period activity in frontal, temporal, cingulate, and parietal regions. Switching from L1 to L2 elicited stronger activity than switching from L2 to L1. These findings suggest that MEG can reveal pre-speech dynamics of bilingual language switching.
