CEFR-Based Plain Japanese Translation using Generative AI

(in English) In recent years, with the increase in the number of foreign residents, "Plain Japanese" has attracted attention as a means of providing easy-to-read texts for Japanese language learners. In particular, presenting texts tailored to learners' Japanese proficiency levels is considered effective for supporting reading comprehension. In this study, we propose a multi-level Japanese simplification method based on the CEFR and develop level-specific translations using the generative AI. We established level criteria using CEFR-compliant teaching materials and the "Yasanichi Checker," and designed prompts to each CEFR level.
The evaluation results confirmed that stepwise adjustment of text simplicity according to CEFR levels is possible. Furthermore, comparative experiments revealed that while our proposed leveling method improves readability, readability does not necessarily correspond to actual comprehension. This suggests the importance of providing texts that appropriately match the individual user's proficiency level.
