Continuous Sign Language Recognition via Synthetic Data Augmentation from Isolated Signs

(in English) A lack of training data, caused by the high cost of data collection and privacy concerns regarding signers′ identities, poses a significant challenge in the practical implementation of continuous sign language recognition. In this study, we propose a method to augment training data by artificially synthesizing continuous sign language sequences from existing isolated sign videos using keypoint coordinates. Training a Transformer model with the synthesized data, which incorporates easing function-based interpolation between signs and dynamic data augmentation, resulted in a substantial improvement in recognition accuracy. Furthermore, we confirmed characteristics such as a plateau in accuracy as vocabulary size and data volume increased, as well as error tendencies specific to the autoregressive model.
