Non-Contact Heartbeat Measurement Using Multiple Doppler Sensors During Typing and Speaking

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Non-contact heart rate monitoring using Doppler sensors has been actively researched as an unobtrusive vital sign measurement technique. However, since the body surface displacement induced by heartbeats is extremely minute, accurately extracting heartbeats in environments contaminated by noise from daily body movements, such as typing and speaking, remains a significant challenge. To address this issue, this study proposes a novel R-R interval (RRI) estimation algorithm with improved robustness against body movement artifacts. The proposed method establishes a common baseline across three sensors based on past RRI estimates to detect and remove outliers caused by body movement noise. Furthermore, the estimation results from each sensor are integrated, and the optimal RRI is selected by introducing a reliability score that considers the number of calculated RRIs and the number of sensors contributing to the calculation. Evaluation experiments conducted on adult subjects during typing and speaking demonstrated that the RMSE rate was below 10 % in 10 of the 11 measurement cases. These results indicate that the proposed method enables highly accurate non-contact heart rate monitoring even in work environments that require typing or speaking.
