Many Japanese pear cultivars exhibit self-incompatibility; therefore, cross-pollination is required to achieve stable fruit set. Pollination methods are broadly classified into natural pollination and artificial pollination. However, natural pollination is strongly affected by weather conditions, resulting in unstable fruit set. For this reason, artificial pollination performed manually by workers is commonly adopted in agricultural production sites. However, the flowering period suitable for pollination is very short, typically only two to three days, causing pollination work to be concentrated within a limited time period. Consequently, reducing the labor required for pollination has become an important issue. In this study, we are developing an automatic pollen spraying device to address this issue. The developed sprayer employs a compressed-air spraying mechanism and additionally applies high voltage to the sprayed pollen to improve pollen adhesion and fruit set through electrostatic effects. Furthermore, the sprayer is designed to be mounted on a ground-based mobile robot, and its structure allows the spray nozzles to approach flowering branches closely. During spraying, the nozzle closest to the target flower is selectively activated. This report presents experimental results obtained during the Japanese pear flowering season in April 2026, including operational verification of the developed sprayer, evaluation of fruit set rate, and comparative analysis of work efficiency with conventional methods. Future work will focus on improving the sprayer based on these experimental results and advancing the integration with a ground-based mobile robot toward realization of an automatic pollination system. |
