With the increasing bandwidth and higher-order modulation in satellite communications, the impact of nonlinear distortion in power amplifiers has become more significant, and nonlinear distortion compensation techniques are becoming increasingly important for achieving higher capacity and lower power consumption of communication equipment. In particular, for satellite communication downlinks, digital predistortion (DPD) is effective for realizing highly efficient amplifier operation. However, the miniaturization of DPD is required because onboard satellite equipment is subject to stringent constraints on circuit size and power consumption. In this paper, Envelope Time-Delay Neural Network (ETDNN), a neural-network-based digital predistortion technique, is applied to an X-band power amplifier for satellite communications, and high distortion compensation accuracy is achieved with computational complexity as low as that of conventional methods without neural networks. The results indicate that approximately 40% improvement in output power and power efficiency can be expected. |
