[Invited Lecture] Teleoperation Using Low-Latency IP Video Transmission

(in English) Recent advances in both hardware and software have accelerated the development of autonomous robots using AI. Nevertheless, human teleoperation remains essential in situations that require advanced perception, decision-making, and manipulation. The increasing bandwidth and decreasing latency of networks have made remote operation over the Internet a realistic option beyond geographical constraints. However, Glass-to-Glass latency, or video latency, can still reach several hundred milliseconds, disturbing the operator's perception, decision-making, and motor feedback loop and degrading task performance.
This paper summarizes several teleoperation case studies using a low-latency IP video transmission system developed by the authors. Through these cases, we show the role of low-latency visual feedback in enabling teleoperation that requires rapid perception and precise operation.
