Linear time-frequency analysis, such as the short-time Fourier transform (STFT), plays a crucial role in non-stationary signal processing. However, it suffers from limitations such as the time-frequency resolution trade-off stemming from Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and the resulting spectral smearing. This presentation provides an overview of the reassignment method, which enhances sparsity by relocating time-frequency components to coordinates determined by local instantaneous frequencies and group delays. Specifically, the mathematical foundations and principles of the reassignment method based on the STFT and wavelet transform are first outlined. Recent advanced techniques, including the synchrosqueezing transform capable of phase-preserving signal reconstruction as well as higher-order and extended methods, are then introduced. Furthermore, application examples in acoustic signal processing are presented. |
