Device-Centric Cooperative Floor-Level Estimation under Sparse Anchor Deployment in Multi-Story Buildings

(in English) In recent years, information and communication technology (ICT) has been actively introduced into construction sites. In particular, at large-scale construction sites, wireless positioning technologies are expected to visualize the locations of workers and equipment for safety monitoring and equipment management. However, buildings under construction are often not sufficiently equipped with existing communication infrastructure, such as wireless LANs, or power-supply facilities assumed in conventional indoor positioning systems. Furthermore, building interiors change continuously, requiring wireless devices to be flexibly relocated according to construction progress. Therefore, positioning technologies that can cover an entire building with only a small number of wireless devices without relying on existing communication infrastructure are required.
This paper proposes a device-centric cooperative floor-level estimation method for multi-story buildings with sparsely deployed fixed access points (APs). The proposed method uses both AP-to-terminal and inter-terminal received signal strength (RSS) observations. The inter-terminal RSS observations are converted into a metric representing the floor difference between terminals, from which least-squares (LS) and Bayesian formulations are derived based on a common observation model. Numerical ray-tracing evaluations demonstrate that the proposed method improves the probability of floor detection compared with the non-cooperative scheme, particularly when more neighboring terminals are available for collaboration.
