Robust Base Station Placement Optimization Using Bayesian Optimization and Probabilistic Radio Maps

(in English) In millimeter-wave communications, received signal strength fluctuates drastically due to minute changes in terminal position and orientation. Consequently, deterministic radio maps representing only expected values cannot adequately account for the risk of communication outages. In this study, we propose a robust base station placement optimization method using a probabilistic radio map, which represents received signal strength as a probability distribution. The proposed method combines Ray Tracing (RT) and Transformer-based Mixture of Prior-Data Fitted Networks (MoPFNs) to rapidly construct this map, and applies Bayesian optimization to efficiently search for outage-resilient base station designs. Evaluation results across multiple simulation environments confirmed that the proposed method reduces prediction overestimation—a challenge in conventional approaches—and achieves robust base station placement resilient to signal fluctuations. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the proposed method reduces optimization time compared to constructing the map using solely RT.
