To investigate speech acquisition, we examined auditory feedback system for self-produced speech in the high-functioning children with autism, age-matched typically developing children and healthy adults by measuring the Lombard effect which describes the tendency for speakers to increase pitch, intensity, and duration in the presence of noise.. The subjects were instructed to name 50 pictures of objects aloud with and without masking noise through a headset. The subjects’ speech loudness was significantly greater in the typically-developing children than in the autistic children. On the other hand, the f0 variance by masking was significantly greater in the autistic children than in the typically developing children. The present findings suggest deficits in auditory feedback system and difficulty in motor control in autistic children, which could be one of the reasons for their unique speech development. |
