FPGAs (Field-Programmable Gate Arrays), which can implement arbitrary logic circuits
any number of times by loading context data, are also applicable to implementation of
fault tolerant (FT) systems due to their reconfigurability.
Several previous works have discussed FPGA based FT systems
such that a system is implemented with multiple blocks on an FPGA, and when detecting
an error, the FPGA isolates the faulty block and reconfigures the system with the same function
on the remaining fault-free blocks.
Such FT systems can be classified according to recovering methods:
fail-soft and stand-by-redundant systems.
In this paper, focusing on these two types of systems, we propose a probabilistic model for evaluating
both fail-soft systems and stand-by-redundant systems, and analyze their reliability and performance.
The analytical results show that we can choose an appropriate system from these two types
of FT systems according to required application. |
