Languages differ from one another and must therefore be learned. Thus any account of language acquisition must acknowledge the various means by which languages use form to signal meaning. This linguistic diversity extends to processing and production biases that arise from the fact that sentences are understood and produced incrementally. For example, long “heavy” noun phrases tend to be shifted to late clause positions in English, but to early positions in Japanese. This paper presents a computational model that can learn the distinct grammatical properties of English and Japanese while, at the same time, accounting for the variability in processing biases. |
