Effects of Phrase Length and Referentiality in the Word-Order in Japanese Production -- A Corpus Analysis --

(in English) The current study examined the effects of phrase length and referentiality in a large corpus of spontaneous spoken language, Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ) [National Institute for Japanese Language & National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (2004)]. Both effects of length and referential expressions were observed in the transitive sentences, ditransitive sentences, and transitive sentences with a locative phrase. Speakers tended to scramble Accusative-marked phrase ahead of its canonical position when it was long or contained a referential phrase. At the same time, we observed a great deal of variety in the frequency of scrambled sentences and in the degree of effects by production factors among sentence types. This shows different degree of canonicality of those structures.
