Learning Support System for English Composition and Conversation Using Machine Translation

(in English) We have developed a learning support system for English composition and conversation using Japanese to English machine translation engine Laurel(ver.1). Laurel is hybrid machine translation system combining rule-based and example-based translation method. It is capable of translating Japanese sentence written in English textbook for junior high school students into English sentence with high-quality. We realized this learning support system by developing the user-interface between human and computer, and the function to make machine translation process transparent. This system will make it possible to provide such new Internet services as convenient learning support tool for English composition and conversation using machine translation system.
