Nowadays many elementary school students in Japan found the addition with carrying and the subtraction with borrowing encountered in school arithmetic very difficult to understand, and many of them fell behind. There is, however, a remarkable educational practice which has been implemented for the recent 4 years by the teachers of Fukuoka Prefecture. Their original approach to “calculate from the highest place” has kept all students on track. Furthermore, this calculation method has been proved to enable students to learn even higher-grade arithmetic than their own grades.
The speaker thinks that this remarkable success arises from the difference of the bottom-up (zoom-out) type mental structure of Westerners and the top-down (zoom-in) type Japanese mental structure. |
