A Study of English Perceptual Verbs Based on Three Types of Corpora -- How are perceptual verbs described and how are those verbs used? --
Satoshi Inoue (Kobe Univ.) TL2012-40
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In the current study, we analyzed how the content of high school textbooks influences students’ use of perceptual verbs, which many high school students find it difficult to use. Examining the three different types of corpora, high school textbooks corpus, high school students’ essay corpus, which were newly compiled by the author, as well as English native speaker corpus, we have revealed that perceptual verbs occur very often, but they are not explained appropriately in textbooks, and that high school students tend to use perceptual verbs in highly deviant sentence structures. These findings suggest that the content of textbooks negatively influences students’ use of perceptual verbs to some extent.
