A Literary Elegant Composition by Untold Words -- Mechanism of Ellipsis in Haiku --
Yoshihiko Nitta (Nihon Univ.) TL2012-62
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The demand for writing and/or reading beautiful sentences such as elegant prose, Haiku and Tanka, may be
universal thing that exists beyond time, place and situation. It is obvious that stringing together flowery words and elegant phrases dose not result any beautiful sentences or text. We can take easily many examples of beautiful prose or texts from among Chinese and Japanese classical literatures. Beautiful sentences often have stronger powers for attracting readers' mind than those of trite phrasing. Almost all the people think that writing a beautiful phrases and/or sentences is not an easy task. One quick secret of writing a beautiful sentence is "saying and/or writing nothing unnecessary" .Haiku, the Japanese classical poetic fragmental sentence has reached the highest artistic position by adopting this secret thoroughly. This paper reports the research result about the mechanism of unsaying or cutting words and phrases in Haiku composition, which is based on the concept of functional grammar. The functional grammar is a grammar theory that views a sentence as a sort of mathematical function. The research corpus is a collection of Haikus from classical era to modern era. We also try to find the beauty of unsaying from among common sentences of ordinary life-style.
