Verbalizing of Emotions by Multilingual Speakers in Japan -- Focused on Codeswitching --

(in English) Many multilingual speakers in Japanese society use different languages according to situations and/or persons, even though Japanese society has been regarded as a monolingual society. Especially, they are able to express their emotions using different languages, including Japanese, although the ways to express emotions in Japanese are generally not taught in Japanese language education. One of the reasons for this may be multilingual speakers understanding which language or which expression in each language is proper to express their own emotion by acquiring Japanese expressions or experiencing language socialization by themselves in Japanese society.
This paper investigates verbalizing of emotions by multilingual speakers in Japan and how they have become able to verbalize their feelings, focused on codeswitching, in order to examine whether and how verbalizing of emotions can be taught or supported in Japanese language education.
