Shy users' self-disclosure on Twitter

(in English) According to previous literature, CMC (Computer-mediated Communication) facilitates self-disclosure (i.e., to talk truthfully about oneself) especially for shy users, because it allows user’s identity to remain anonymous. We examined the effects of anonymity and self-rated shyness on Twitter. The main results of two questionnaires comparing self-disclosure on Twitter to self-disclosure in face-to-face interactions were as follows.
1. Among those who set their Twitter accounts to remain anonymous, shy users tend to tweet self-disclosing information more often than expected compared to outgoing users.
2. The trend in (1) does not hold for users who disclose their identities on Twitter. However, contrary to previous studies, where participants were randomly assigned to anonymous/non-anonymous conditions, in this study participants had set their anonymity level on their own, which could already reflect differences not measured here (e.g., other personality traits, purpose of using Twitter).
