Recipients interpretation of Japanese business email communication -- the situation conjecture expression --
Yuki Hiramatsu (Waseda Univ.) TL2016-42
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The purpose of this study is to clarify what kind of interpretations are available in Japanese business email communication. The present study puts its focus on the expression which give rise to different interpretations among recipients and between the sender and the recipient. Qualitative research is conducted to examine the awareness of communication participants (i.e. a person as a sender and / or a recipient). The author conducted two surveys of Japanese business email communication. The senders were asked to write email messages and were then later interviewed. The recipients were asked to read the messages written by the senders and were then later interviewed about their awareness. The survey data was analyzed by focusing on functional constituents which were interpreted differently among the recipients and between the senders and recipients. We found that different interpretations arose with “the situation conjecture expression”. The sender wrote the expression to give specific considerations “Hairyo”, while the recipients interpreted it differently. For example, one recipient felt “kindness” while another recipient felt “impoliteness” with the same expression.
