Contextual Variations in the Apologetic Expressions in Japanese
Takayuki Konishi, Ai Kanato, Yasunari Harada, Sachiko Shudo (Waseda U.) TL2018-69
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Japanese is rich in apologetic expressions. This is a great challenge for the second language learners of Japanese. In the current study, we conducted surveys in which we presented respondents scenarios of differing a) social relationships, b) psychological distance and c) formality of the setting, and asked the respondents which phrases of apology s/he would choose to use. The result shows that, whereas the choice of actual expression had great individual variation, there were at the same time groups of expressions the choice of which primarily relied on context rather than individual preferences. The results will be discussed in relation to acquisition and teaching of Japanese as a second language.
