[Poster Presentation] Newspapers speak “two” languages: Evidence from the use of fānzhuǎn “flip” in Taiwan

(in English) This study investigates whether social developments influence people?s preference for syntactic constructions or not. In Chinese, the word 翻轉 ?flip? can lead to two constructions: one focuses on the change of status, the other focuses on causality. Through comparing the written data from United Daily News (UDN) with Liberty Times (LT), the frequency of causality has been dramatically increased since 2014 in these two newspapers because of the social development in Taiwan. Furthermore, these two newspapers prefer to use 翻轉 in different topics in different periods. This study suggests the intertwining complexities between social development and dynamic change of language.
