In this paper, we consider a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, in which uplink and downlink multiple-antenna users located within the coverage area are jointly served by the system. In this context, we propose a joint design of access point (AP) allocation and beamforming, which aims to maximize the minimum achievable throughput among the users while satisfying the transmit power constraint. In order to solve this problem efficiently, we reformulate the latter as a convex optimization problem by utilizing fractional programming and entropy regularization techniques. Also, we propose a novel initialization method for the AP allocation problem based on the received signal strength so as to improve the convergence property. It is shown via simulation that the proposed algorithm reveals a reasonable compromise between the throughput and user fairness. |
