Performance Evaluation of Intelligent Reflecting Surface in Multi-Access Point Network Environment

(in English) Currently, the demand over WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) is higher than traditional WLAN can provide owing to the proliferation of devices and data. Therefore, 60GHz frequency and joint transmission (JT) techniques are introduced through the cooperation of multiple access points (APs) in the latest IEEE 802.11be to support and meet such massive demands. However, the lower communication quality can be experienced if there is an obstacle between the AP and station when JT is performed using 60GHz frequency. The reason for lower quality is the unavailability of AP and a decrement in the number of data streams. Therefore, this paper considers Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS) to improve the propagation environment by providing a new clear path for the communication between APs and devices. The use of IRS for JT in a multi-AP network environment can have an issue to separate signals when different signals are reflected by one IRS owing to the arrival direction of the reflected signals by IRS being the same. Hence, this paper presents the performance analysis of IRS-enabled WLAN by simulating various multi-AP network environments with or without IRS.
