The acquisition of onomatopoeia is said to be based on sensory experiences in childhood. Therefore, for native Japanese speakers, onomatopoeia is a naturally acquired as they grow. However, can the natural acquisition process of onomatopoeia apply to foreign learners of Japanese? Rather, onomatopoeia may be extremely difficult for foreign learners of Japanese to acquire naturally due to the fact that they are not linked to sensory experiences in childhood. For them, onomatopoeia may be acquired as general vocabulary rather than as sound symbolic words. In this talk, I will introduce empirical studies supporting the hypothesis that onomatopoeia is acquired as general vocabulary by learners of Japanese as a foreign language. |
