Binary Radio Tomographic Imaging Based on LOS/NLOS Identification

(in English) Radio Tomographic Imaging (RTI) is a technique to estimate Spatial Loss Fields (SLFs) that are maps quantifying the attenuation of radio signals in a monitored region. In this article, we consider RTI techniques in indoor factory environments, which deteriorate the performance of the RTI techniques due to severe multi-path channels. We propose the Binary Radio Tomographic Imaging (Binary RTI) method, where the attenuation level of each pixel in a SLF is defined as a binary value. The binary RTI method is suited for the factory environments including metallic objects, because radio signals are almost fully reflected rather than absorbed by these objects. The proposed method identifies whether received signals are transmitted on a line-of-sight (LOS) path or a non-line-of-sight path by analyzing their channel impulse responses, and the binary SLF is estimated from the LOS/NLOS identification. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method with simulation experiments.
