Mizusawa VLBI Observatory of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) has been requested to conduct broadband radio observations in the UHF band. However, continuous broadband observation is difficult because of radio frequency interferences (RFI). Therefore, we have developed a superconducting penta-band bandpass filter (PB-BPF) that can observe the several RFI-free bands (0.7, 1.4, 1.6, 2.1, and 2.7 GHz). We devised a feeding method in which the external quality factors of all passbands are individually adjusted with only one common feed line. Because the desired external quality factor can be obtained by electric and magnetic field coupling, BPFs can be placed in spaces within the substrate at higher densities. We succeeded in designing a filter with good frequency response in all bands (7 to 10 poles), and the fabricated compact PB-BPF has low loss and steep cutoff characteristics. It was shown to be an effective solution for the RFI problem. |
