Two Cognitive Processes - Quantitive and Relational Meanings and Modes of Thought
Hiroshi Sano (TUFS) TL2023-5
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In the previous article (TL2022-40), the author focused on the two cognitive processes of recognizing things and explained that the difference in segmentation for giving meaning to the external world corresponds to the two meaning formations of quantification and relationalization. In contrasting the meaning of quantification and relationalization shown in it, the tendency of power (transitive expression) and feeling (intransitive expression), the difference between volitional modality and cognitive modality, absolute tense (perceptual experience) and relative tense. The article took up the conflict of (recognition imagination) and discussed its application to language education. This paper argues that the semantic contrast between quantification and relational influences the selection of the basic mode of reasoning. Under quantification, deductive thinking is preferred. On the other hand, when the focus is on relationalization, way of thinking leans toward hypothetical deductive thinking. This difference in tendency affects the difference in anaphora features (set-theoretic interpretation of individual objects and topological relational interpretation), and also corresponds to the preference of paragraph writings (persuasion strategy and empathy strategy).
