Study on Beamforming Feedback in Wireless LANs and Singular Value Decomposition

We investigated the properties of beamforming feedback (BFF) facilitated by singular value decomposition (SVD) as a step towards achieving firmware-independent WiFi sensing. Because channel state information (CSI) has fine-grained information reflecting the radio propagation, CSI has been used as the WiFi sensing feature. However, obtaining CSI requires the customized firmware, and this constrains the adoption of CSI-based WiFi sensing. On the other hand, because BFF is transmitted without encryption and BFF contains partial information of CSI which is calculated by applying SVD to CSI, BFF has been used as the WiFi sensing feature instead of CSI. Focusing on the relationship between the SVD and principal component analysis, numerical evaluation demonstrated that the first-column vector of BFF matrix reflects the temporal variance of radio propagation. Additionally, as a case study in WiFi sensing that leverages the temporal variance of radio propagation, we focus on the task of Line-of-Sight (LOS) identification. Through empirical evaluations based on data collected from real-world experiments, we establish that BFF is capable of discerning LOS conditions with an accuracy on par with that of CSI. |
