Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper discusses alternative translations and expressions from an analysis of translation methods used by Edward Seidensticker that would change or leave intact the meaning, subtext, and/or nuance of the original text, and how context can change such meaning or nuance, and the degree of fidelity and naturalness in the translation Seidensticker eventually adopted. This paper also analyzes reasons Seidensticker might have had for making particular choices he did. The methods examined in the work include more "literal" translation of passages, i.e., translated in the most straightforward way in terms of one-to-one mapping of grammatical, vocabulary, and other aspects, as well as much freer paraphrasing. We derived significant categories and subcategories from paraphrasing and changes that included, among others, the following: adding words and expressions not in the original—for example, to clarify content that is indicated implicitly in the source text, such as relationships (superior/subordinate, formal/casual, etc.); omitting content, e.g., parts that would be redundant or otherwise stylistically awkward; using different metaphors, idioms, and tone; grammatical changes, such as switching from passive to active voice, changing the person (for example, substituting the first person with the third), changing the part of speech (such as using an adjective adverbially), as well as making other changes to fine-tune the meaning (e.g., use of adverbs to add specificity to adjectives); and exaggeration and understatement.
