Development of Vocabulary learning tools for Academic Reading using Affix Analysis

(in English) Reading academic papers in English is an unavoidable path for prospective researchers, and it has been said that a shortcut to this is to read related papers on one’s own or to learn steadily through reading groups in the laboratory. In recent years, a variety of reading comprehension tools have become available, but if you do not read the papers carefully yourself, you will not be able to correct any errors in the tools and maintain the quality of their own papers. It is your own English skills that count, and self-study is essential for this. Students should be able to learn the development and structure of arguments specific to academic papers by reading many papers and/or some textbooks. The more difficult problem will be to learn many academic English expressions and technical terms. Despite the large amount of content to be mastered, the vocabulary required differs from field to field, so the only way is to learn it steadily on one’s own. It would be useful for learners to be provided with personalised vocabulary acquisition tools that use their relevant academic papers and textbooks, which can categorise the vocabulary and expressions in them and classify the expressions into general English expressions, academic expressions that do not depend on their field, and specialised terms that exist in each field, and present the frequency of occurrence and degree of difficulty. In addition, if explanations of affixes can be included, this will deepen the understanding of affixes commonly used in the field and promote efficient learning. In this presentation, we will report on our analysis of Campbell Biology, a biology textbook, and several recent articles, as well as our method for supporting article reading.
