Traditional vs Simplified: Chinese Scripts in the Linguistic Landscape of Yokohama Chinatown

(in English) This study investigates the differences in use between simplified and traditional Chinese characters on written signs on the street in Chinatown in Japan, a country that uses characters (Japanese Kanji) adopted from Chinese characters. The paper focuses on differences in scripts (rather than languages) in the field of Linguistic Landscape (LL) studies. Through field observation, we collected and classified all data from signs and languages within a range visible by pedestrians in an area of Chinatown, then we linked the context behind these signs, including the participants in the process of sign production (owners, readers, and authorities) and the rules applied to each sign (presumed reader condition for communicative end and symbolic value condition for symbolic end). This analysis finds that traditional characters can exhibit more symbolic value than simplified characters in creating an atmosphere of Chinatown that is distinct from the ordinary Japanese landscape. Conversely, simplified characters cannot create the same atmosphere for Japanese visitors but have a clear communicative function, for example, in warning notices for the Chinese residents. In line with LL studies focusing on language use, these findings suggest a correspondence between the nature of a space or place and the use of a particular script.
