Negative-Affirmative Paraphrasing in Japanese-English Translation -- The Translation Techniques Using Paraphrasing --

(in English) This paper reports the probabilities of the polarity-reversing between negative and affirmative expressions in Japanese and English and examines translation techniques through negative-affirmative paraphrasing. There are cases in which negative expressions in Japanese can be paraphrased into affirmative expressions and the rhetorical transformation necessarily can be translated into affirmative expressions in English. Negative conjunctions in Japanese compound sentences, such as “shinai-uchi-ni,” “wo-sezu-ni”, and so on, become affirmative expressions in English translation.
