Reflection on Intercultural Adaptation and Personal Transformation through Study Abroad in India

(in English) This article reflects on the author’s experience of learning and using Tamil during a study abroad program in India, using Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle as a framework for structured debriefing. The account is compared with a free-form progress report written during the same period. Findings suggest that using Tamil fostered connection with South Indian individuals but sometimes alienated those from North and Northeast India. A comparison of the two writing styles revealed that Gibbs’ method describes experiences logically and objectively, while free writing allows the reader to relive the author’s experiences. Furthermore, it was suggested that the objectivity of the description differs depending on the writing style.
The result Gibbs’ model enabled logical, objective analysis, while the free-form writing evoked emotional engagement. Combining both approaches may improve the communicability and educational value of reflective writing, offering deeper insights and meaningful learning experiences for both writers and readers.
