Hard Landscapes, Soft Resources -- Integrating Multilingual Signs and Local Dialects for Inbound Tourists in Fukui, Japan. --

(in English) Following the extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Kanazawa to Tsuruga in March 2024, Fukui City has seen a marked increase in inbound tourists. To properly welcome these visitors and promote regional appeal, it is essential to develop "linguistic landscapes" within the urban space and effectively utilise "dialects" as a unique regional cultural resource. This paper examines the current status and challenges of inbound tourism support from two perspectives: a survey of public multilingual signage around JR Fukui Station, the gateway to the city, and an analysis of Fukui dialect data provided on the web for foreign audiences. The investigation revealed that while "formal guidance" in three major languages (English, Chinese, and Korean) is being established at JR Fukui Station, challenges remain regarding the strategic use of Traditional Chinese for the target market (Taiwan) and consideration for foreign residents (Vietnam, Philippines, etc.). Conversely, regarding dialects as an "informal cultural resource," it was suggested that distribution accompanied by English translations functions not merely as a transmission of meaning, but as a tool for "emotional sharing" and "cultural experience." This paper integrates these "linguistic landscapes for guidance" and "linguistic resources for experience" to propose a unique inbound acceptance model for Fukui.
